Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimate of the optimal weight range for a given height. Unlike BMI, IBW calculations often consider height and sex, and multiple formulas have been developed by medical researchers over the decades.
No single formula is perfect for everyone. This calculator uses five of the most widely referenced formulas and presents the average as your recommended range.
Each formula was developed for different clinical purposes. The Robinson and Miller formulas are the most commonly referenced in modern medicine. The Devine formula was originally used to calculate medication dosages.
The most practical approach is to use the healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9), which gives you a weight range rather than a single number, accounting for natural variation in body composition.
