What is Ideal Body Weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimate of the optimal weight range for a given height. Unlike BMI, IBW calculations often consider height and sex, and multiple formulas have been developed by medical researchers over the decades.

No single formula is perfect for everyone. This calculator uses five of the most widely referenced formulas and presents the average as your recommended range.

Which Formula is Most Accurate?

Each formula was developed for different clinical purposes. The Robinson and Miller formulas are the most commonly referenced in modern medicine. The Devine formula was originally used to calculate medication dosages.

The most practical approach is to use the healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9), which gives you a weight range rather than a single number, accounting for natural variation in body composition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
They are similar but not identical. "Ideal weight" from formulas gives a specific target, while "healthy weight" is a range based on BMI. Both are useful guides, but individual factors like muscle mass, bone density, and ethnicity also matter.
Why do different formulas give different results?
Each formula was developed by different researchers using different study populations. They were originally designed for specific medical uses. The differences are usually small (2–5 kg) and all formulas give a useful general target.
Does ideal weight change with age?
Most IBW formulas do not change significantly with age for adults. However, after age 65, slightly higher BMI values (22–27) may be associated with better health outcomes, as some body fat provides protection against illness.
